Welcome,
We
would like to extend an invitation and invite you to browse around the
historic "Ghost Town" of Pearce, Arizona. This unique
ghost town is at the beginning of the infamous "Ghost Town
Trail" where towns lived and died according to the whims of the
ore veins that ran
throughout the area. Cochise County is full
of these old towns, some with buildings still standing, some with just
mine shafts and the rusting remains of old equipment from the late
1800's and early 1900's.
The
Old Pearce Mercantile is on the National Register of Historic
Buildings and was built in 1893. Work has been done according to
historic guidelines to maintain and preserve the uniqueness of this
old building.
The
perfect place to visit year round to absorb the atmosphere of the old
west. There are several other old building dating from the late
1800's and early 1900's including buildings that were actually
transported over the mountains from Tombstone, AZ
when gold and silver were discovered in the 1800's by James Pearce at what became known as the
Commonwealth Mine. The Commonwealth Mine was said to be one of the
richest mines ever found in Arizona, producing over 15 million dollars
in Gold.
The
Old Pearce Mercantileis currently closed but the
owners are presently working on "opening", in
phases, parts of the mercantile with hopes of
having the whole facility open to visitors in
the coming years. Photo opportunities abound in this area from the old jail
which can be see in the background of the picture above, to crumbling
old houses with half walls.
We invite you to
browse through our
photo
album and enjoy absorbing some of the ambiance of the old west.
We would also like to
invite you to visit Old Pearce Pottery which is
open 5 days a week. Located cattycorner
from the Old Pearce Mercantile you will find
unique southwestern style pottery that will
remind you of your visit to Pearce for years to
come.
